Emergency shelter for flood victims moved to Dale City

Prince William County residents who were evacuated from their homes due to flooding Sept. 8-9 now are being offered shelter at Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center on Minnieville Road in Dale City. The center opened at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, and will remain open through Friday, Sept. 16, according to a statement from the Prince William Park Authority. Except for a preschool program, all regularly scheduled activities have been cancelled for the week.

Earlier, evacuees were offered shelter at Woodbridge High School in Lake Ridge. They have now been relocated to the Baucom Center in Dale City. There were 300 people registered at the shelters, which are being operated by the Red Cross and the Prince William County Department of Social Services (DSS), according to a news release from Nikki Brown, assistant director of communications for Prince William County government.

Brown said the American Red Cross is unable to accept drop-in volunteers at the shelter because of security concerns. Brown also noted that Red Cross officials have stated that they “have the products and services necessary to meet the needs of those at the shelter and requested no products be delivered as it will detract from their ability to manage the situation.”
