Sept. 30 deadline to apply for U.S. service academies

Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) is encouraging Virginia students ages 17-22 interested in applying to U.S. service academies for admission in Summer 2012 to submit their nomination applications by Sept. 30.

“One of the greatest honors I have as a Senator is the responsibility of nominating Virginians to our nation’s service academies,” Webb was quoted as saying.

According to a news release Webb graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1968, and received the Superintendent’s Commendation for outstanding leadership contributions while a midshipman. He served with the Fifth Marine Regiment in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Silver Star Medal, two Bronze Star Medals, and two Purple Hearts. In 1987, he became the first Naval Academy graduate in history to serve in the military and then become Secretary of the Navy.

Students wishing to apply to the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy or U.S.  Merchant Marine Academy must be at least 17 but not older than 22 as of July 1 of the year of admission. Also, they must be legal citizens of the U.S. as of Nov. 1. They must be unmarried with no legal obligations to support children or other dependents and they must be legal residents of Virginia.

Applications and detailed instructions are available online at http://webb.senate.gov/constituentservices/serviceacademy.cfm.
