Republican primary election results

Here is a brief rundown of the results of the Aug. 23 Republican primary elections held to choose GOP candidates for the Nov. 8 general election.

Coles District Supervisor
Marty Nohe won all 12 precincts and the absentee ballots in the Republican Primary election against Robert “Bob” Pugh Aug. 23 to keep his job representing Coles District on Prince William Board of County Supervisors. He will face Anthony Arnold, a Democrat, on Nov. 8.

Brentsville District Supervisor
Wally Covington edged out newcomer Jeanine Lawson by 157 votes in the Aug. 23 Republican primary election to capture a third term representing Brentsville District on Prince William Board of County Supervisors. He has no opposition in the Nov. 8 general election. Covington tallied 1647 votes to Lawson’s 1490, giving him 52.50 percent of the vote to her 47.49 percent, in unofficial returns from the county voter registrar’s office.

Gainesville District Supervisor
Newcomer Peter Candland won the Republican primary election Aug. 23 in Gainesville District, capturing 42.71 percent of the vote over four other candidates, in unofficial returns from Prince William County voter registrar’s office.  The victor tallied 1415 votes, beating Martha Hendley, his nearest competitor, by 322 votes. She received 1093 ballots, and is a longtime member of the county’s planning commission.

36th Senate
Jeff Frederick took 68.64 percent of the primary election votes cast Aug. 23 to win the Republican Party nomination for Virginia State Senate’s 36th District in the Nov. 8 general election. He polled 3670 votes to Tito Munoz’ 1676, and will face Toddy Puller, the incumbent Democrat, in the fall.

39th Senate
Miller Baker took more than 76 percent of the vote in the Aug. 23 Republican primary election to win over Scott Martin in the Virginia State Senate race in the 39th District. Baker will oppose incumbent Democrat George Barker in the Nov. 8 general election.

13th Senate
Loudoun County’s Dick Black squeaked past Prince William County’s John Stirrup by 107 votes to win the Republican primary election in the 13th Virginia State Senate District Aug. 23, according to unofficial returns from Virginia State Board of Elections. Black got 3143 votes to Stirrup’s 3036. Robert “Bob” FitzSimmonds came in third, with 1923 votes. In the Nov. 8 general election, Black will run against Democrat Shawn Mitchell.

87th House
David I. Ramadan won the Republican primary election over Jo-Ann Chase Aug. 23 in his bid to represent the 87th District in Virginia House of Delegates.
The district that includes 19 precincts in Loudoun County and parts of Evergreen and Alvey precincts in Prince William County was designated as the 87th after the House of Delegates’ redistricting plan was adopted earlier this year. There are 100 seats in the House of Delegates. The 87th was previously located in another part of the state.
