VDOT to close some of I-66 to test Traffic Management System gantries Tuesday night

Rolling full closures of I-66 in one direction are scheduled overnight Tuesday, Sept. 8 in order to test Active Traffic Management System gantries, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The first total stoppage will occur at midnight Tuesday on westbound I-66 between Va. Rt. 123 and US Rte. 50.

The rolling closures will then proceed further westbound to US Rte. 29 in Centreville, at which point crews will turn around and continue the rolling closures on eastbound I-66 to the Capital Beltway.

The closures will occur no later than 5 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Each closure will last up to 15 minutes.

The $38.6 million Active Traffic Management System is scheduled to open at the earliest Monday, Sept. 14. The VDOT press release said the “system will improve safety and incident management and include new sign gantries, shoulder and lane control signs, speed displays, incident and queue detection, and increased traffic camera coverage.”
