Summer school students and faculty as well as other college staffers at the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College will get a few “history days” off later this month.
The campus, adjacent to Manassas National Battlefield Park, will be closed from noon on Wednesday, July 20 through Sunday, July 24 to help accommodate the influx of guests expected for Civil War anniversary events scheduled nearby.
The campus will reopen at 6 a.m. Monday, July 25 for regularly scheduled classes, activities and services.
Event organizers requested the use of NOVA’s parking lots and grounds to support the large number of visitors expected for the commemoration, according to campus officials.
“Although we are reluctant to disrupt our summer session, we recognize the historic nature of this event and want to be good neighbors. We believe the decision to close is in the best interest of our students, employees and the community,” Provost Hortense Hinton was quoted as saying , in a press release.
All campus activities and services have been cancelled during the priod of the civil war commemoration, although classes may be held in some other format. Instruction will continue online or through previously arranged alternative assignments. Students may use services at other NOVA campuses during the closure.
The closure also applies to NOVA’s Innovation Park Center in Manassas. Also, Workforce Development programs, services and activities have been rescheduled. Faculty, staff and students will not have access to the Manassas Campus and NOVA parking permits will not be valid during the closure, campus sources said. As an alternative, NOVA officials suggested that those who need to register for classes, buy parking permits, order books, etc. can do so on the community college’s website, http://www.nvcc.edu .
