Call for high school seniors to apply for NOVEC and electric co-op scholarships

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) and the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) are now accepting applications for higher-education scholarships from high school and home-schooled seniors who receive electricity from electric cooperatives.

NOVEC Scholarships

The NOVEC Scholarship Program will award $1,500 scholarships to qualified graduating public high school students in NOVEC’s service territory in Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties, and in the City of Manassas Park. An additional $1,500 scholarship will go to a student in NOVEC’s service territory who either attends private school or is home-schooled.

From the scholarship winners, the committees will select the overall outstanding student for the $1,500 J. Manley Garber Scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship will receive a total of $3,000 to help with his or her college education. 

Scholarship committees will look for students who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, community service, work experience and leadership skills. A scholarship applicant must:

1. Be a college-bound high school senior whose parents or guardians currently receive electric service from NOVEC.

2. Have at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and submit an official transcript that includes first-semester grades.

3. Submit Student Achievement Test (SAT) scores; unofficial SAT scores will be accepted.

4. Demonstrate a wide range of participation and leadership in extracurricular activities, community service, and/or work experience.

5. Submit two letters of recommendation—one from a high school official, such as a teacher or counselor; and one from a community member, such as a church or Scout leader.
 
6. Submit a 400-word typed autobiographical essay.

7. Complete the NOVEC scholarship application and submit all required materials online at http://www.novec.com/Community/scholarships.cfm no later than March 16, 2015. Applications may not be mailed or hand delivered since the entire process will be done electronically. Failure to submit a complete package electronically by the deadline will disqualify students from consideration.

VMDAEC Scholarships

High school and home-schooled seniors whose parents or guardians are electric cooperative members in Virginia, Maryland or Delaware may apply for scholarships from the VMDAEC Educational Scholarship Foundation. An applicant must be entering his or her first semester at a college or technical/trade school in autumn 2015.

The foundation will award $1,000 scholarships to students who have been selected based on their financial need, academic achievement, and personal statements. VMDAEC will send scholarship funds directly to a recipient’s chosen educational institution for help with tuition, room and board, student fees, or book purchasing.

Supporting documents may be mailed to P. O. Box 2340, Glen Allen, VA 23058-2340, but they must be postmarked no later than midnight on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Documents may also be hand delivered by the close of business on Feb. 11.

Since 2000, the VMDAEC Educational Scholarship Foundation has awarded 470 scholarships totaling $369,500.
