County School Board okays alternative boundary plan for 12th high school, subject to USDofJ approval

Students from the River Falls, Coventry Glen, Bacon Race, Reid’s Prospect, and Cannon Bluff communities off Davis Ford Road in Woodbridge will attend the county’s newest high school being built in Manassas under a revised boundary plan adopted at the Prince William Çounty School Board’s November 18 meeting.

The school will open in September 2016 without a senior class. Rising juniors will have the option of attending the new 12th high school or completing their high school careers at their original schools.

The newly added communities expand the High School’s attendance area established in the Alternative Boundary Plan. That plan was originally released on October 28, in response to both community input, and Department of Justice (DOJ) concerns about the racial and ethnic composition of the new school population.

The DOJ previously announced it would not challenge the demographic mix created by the Alternative Plan. It has yet to review the newly revised boundaries.

The latest changes followed extensive community feedback. Beyond adding the new communities to the 12th high school attendance area, the School Board directed the Superintendent to enhance the specialty programs at Osbourn Park High School to increase potential enrollment there.

A liberal transfer policy will be put in place for students from the eastern portion of the Trentdale community who wish to remain at Hylton High School. Students enrolled in Hylton specialty programs will also have the option to remain at that school.
