Prince William Police to step up enforcement for drinking and driving this Halloween

Halloween falls on a Friday this year, which could lead to more partying and drinking than usual, according to Prince William Police Officer Shawn Gallagher, and police have a plan to crack down on those who drive under the influence.

“The Prince William County Police Department is going to be out in full force to protect drivers from drunk drivers. We’re also going to be out with extra enforcement specifically for DUIs.”

Gallagher said the best way for people to stay safe and to keep others safe is to be responsible all around. “

Some of the things residents can do to stay safe this Halloween is – don’t drink and drive. If you’re having a Halloween party, make sure everyone has a sober driver. Don’t be afraid to take somebody’s keys away. If you’re at party and you can’t get a ride home, mass transit’s not available, sleep it off where you’re at. Make sure you’re sober. Have a pot of coffee in the morning … and get home safe,” Gallagher said.

Other options are also available to people who have been drinking, Gallagher said.

The non-profit Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), which aims to prevent drunken driving in the Washington Metropolitan Area, will once again be offering its SoberRide program to keep drunken drivers off the road. Call SoberRide at 800-200-TAXI (8294), between 10 p.m. on Oct 31 to 4 a.m. on Nov 1, for a cab ride home with a fare of up to $30.

Gallagher said the department’s goal is for Prince William County residents to have as few accidents as possible this Halloween. People should, as always, wear their seatbelts and pay attention to other drivers. “We want to make sure that everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.”
