City of Manassas Fire & Rescue and Police Camps
City of Manassas Fire & Rescue and Police will hold summer camps for incoming freshman of Osbourn High School July 7-18.
Manassas City Police Camp is two one-week camps being held at the Manassas City Police Department.
During Police Camp, teens will learn how to conduct a traffic stop; see demonstrations from the K-9 Unit, Bike Team and Motor Unit; learn about evidence collection; tour the animal shelter; visit with the Manassas City SWAT Team; and learn about physical defense tactics. The week culminates with a laser tag exercise and pizza party held at a City of Manassas business.
The City of Manassas Fire & Rescue Department will hold one two-week incoming freshman camp and one one-week rising sophomore camp.
The freshman camp offers hands-on experience learning what it takes to be a firefighter. Campers will learn to suit up in under a minute, communicate on the radio, ride in a fire truck, use a fire hose to put out mock fires and other basic firefighting skills. On the emergency services side, students will learn CPR and basic first aid, and explore a medevac helicopter.
During the Fire & Rescue sophomore camp July 28-Aug. 1, students will take their skills to the next level, carrying a hose through a burn house, experiencing an airplane crash simulation and using firefighting tools to take apart a car, as firefighters do to extricate victims of car accidents.
These camps are an opportunity for high school students to explore possible career choices as they begin their high school journey. At Osbourn High School, who attend both the freshman and sophomore Fire & Rescue camps become eligible for the new EMS/Firefighting courses being offered in their junior and senior years.
Manassas City Police Charitable Foundation, run by the Manassas City Police Association, has made a monetary donation to both camps to help with expenses in an effort to provide outreach to youth in our community. The association is run with funds donated by the community, and the police feel this is a great way to give back to that community.
