Upcoming weekend of Celtic music with Choraliers

New Dominion Choraliers of Prince William County will bring a Celtic flair to Potomac High School in Dumfries this weekend. May 14 and 15, when singers and guests take to the stage for the group’s 15th annual spring program, A Celtic & American Tapestry.
The Choraliers will begin their performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 15.  Potomac Senior High School is located at 3401 Panther Pride Drive in Dumfries.
NDC women’s group, Voci d’Angeli, will open the show with “Three Anonymous Irish Love Songs” arranged by James Q. Mulholland.
According to Wendy Boone, publicity chairman, the first half of the program will feature such Irish, Welsh and Scottish tunes as “Danny Boy”  and “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?” There will be selections from the 1940s musical “Brigadoon” such as “It’s Almost Like Being in Love” as well.
Boone said the second part of the program will feature familiar American folk songs that the Choraliers hope will set the audience to clapping hands and tapping feet.  “If your children want to dance in the aisles, let them dance,” she enthused.
The American Songbook will include such tunes as “Shenandoah”  and a group of spirituals such as “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.” The show will close with “An Old Irish Blessing, she added.”
Bagpiper Jamie Fountain, a high school senior who has been playing for five years, will play the pipes early in the show and during intermission. He has been a member of the Washington Scottish Pipe Band for four years. 
The pre-show, at 7 p.m. May 14 and at 3 p.m. May 15, will feature The Boyle School of Irish Dance, a member of the An Coimisium le Rinci Gaelacha in Dublin, Ireland.
The certified Irish dancing school–that holds classes is Manassas and three other Northern Virginia locations–is owned and operated by award-winning dancers Alannah Boyle Sweeney, TCRG, ADCRG and Ellen Boyle Gibbons, TCRG, ADCRG, Boone said they “grew up immersed in Irish culture, music, and dance,”  are winners of regional and national championship competitions and have qualified for the World Championships in Ireland.
