As principal of Woodbridge Senior High School and earlier as an assistant principal there, Alan Ross logged countless hours.
Now the retired educator is putting in some 50 hours a week planning for the school’s 50th anniversary next year and recruiting more than 26,000 alumni to attend the festivities.
Scheduled for September 12 and 13, 2014, the celebration will be divided between Woodbridge Middle School (the original site of Woodbridge Senior High School and its home for ten years) and the “new” building, which has housed the school since 1974.
The events will begin with an open house at Woodbridge Middle School featuring slide shows of each class that attended high school in that building, along with teams and activities. Also planned are performances by bands from that era who played at high school dances.
“The first day, we will start at Woodbridge Middle School from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. and then move to Woodbridge Senior High School for a GIGANTIC tailgate before the football game,” Ross said. “Then the football game, followed by optional socializing at various restaurants around Woodbridge.” Ross explained that scheduling of the post-game socializing will be left to individual groups.
“On Saturday we will have something similar only much bigger at the ‘new’ WSHS from noon to 6 p.m. with entertainment in the auditorium, gym and even on the football field, including performances from the Woodbridge Senior High School marching band, Vikettes dance troupe and cheerleaders.
Currently all events are free and Ross said he hopes to keep it that way. Fundraising through the sale of t-shirts and car magnets will help cover the costs of the celebration, he said.
T-shirts are available in forest green or bright gold in both long and short sleeves. Short sleeves are $15 and long-sleeved shirts are $18, with all XXL and XXXL shirts costing an additional dollar, Ross said.
Car magnets that proclaim “50 years of WSHS” are also available for $5.
“I’m the t-shirt and magnet guy,” Ross said. “If someone is interested in getting magnets or t-shirts they can reach me at

He encourages alumni and friends to find out more about the celebration.
“We have a Facebook event site and a website, http://www.50yearsofWSHS.com where people can find out more and sign up to be at the event,” he said.
“Check it out. We are going to have tons of staff, students and parents coming together for this thing. It is going to be BIG - Very BIG!!”
