How should White-tailed Deer should be managed at Manassas National Battlefield Park? The National Park Service wants public comments at a May 24 meeting, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the MNBP Visitor Center at 6511 Sudley Road, Manassas.
Those who want to comment but cannot attend the meeting can do so at the project planning website: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/battlefielddeerplan.
NPS has decided to develop a White-tailed Deer Management Plan and Environment Impact Statement due to dense deer population within MNBP boundaries and the effect deer are having on the battlefield’s forest and cultural landscapes, according to a news release.
“Scoping is the first step to involve the public in the planning process,” the news release stated This step includes public meetings and other opportunities for public comment so concerns are “identified early and the analysis is focused on important issues.” The plan/EIS “will analyze many complex ecological, cultural, and social issues.”
Antietam and Monacacy National Battlefields in Maryland also will be covered by the plan/EIS. NPS says all three battlefields have similar deer management issues. The May 24 meeting at MNBP replaces an April 12 meeting that was cancelled. Antietam’s rescheduled public meeting is May 25; Monocacy’s is May 26.
