OmniRide’s Tysons Express will offer free rides on Monday, April 22, to celebrate Earth Day and to mark the fact that one million riders have taken advantage of the two regional Tysons buses routes that are funded by Virginia Megaprojects.
In 2009, Virginia Megaprojects started funding the Tysons Express-Woodbridge bus service to help provide commuting options during the construction of the I-495 High Occupancy Toll lanes.
The Tysons Express-Loudoun service started in 2010 to help mitigate congestion during construction of Metro’s Silver Line. Both the Woodbridge and Loudoun bus lines offer comfortable transportation with free Wi-Fi, enabling passengers to go online, read or sleep rather than worrying about driving on the congested roadways.
Since the services started, Virginia Megaprojects estimates that one million riders have left their cars behind and chosen to ride the bus to and from Tysons. In February, the Tysons Express-Woodbridge bus schedule was revised to reflect an average time savings of 20 minutes now that the HOT lanes are open.
The Tysons Express-Woodbridge service has two local stops–Woodbridge VRE station and Route 123 / I-95 commuter lot. There are four trips to Tysons in the mornings and five return trips in the afternoons/evenings. Easy transfers are available at the Woodbridge VRE station for those who ride VRE and live south of Prince William County. Once in Tysons, passengers have their choice of 16 bus stops and also can connect to a shuttle serving eastern Tysons.
Promotional bus fares on the Tysons Express-Woodbridge service are currently $2.65 per trip with a SmarTrip card or $3.30 per trip with cash. But VRE monthly pass holders who board the bus at the Woodbridge VRE station ride for free in the mornings and only have to pay a bus fare for the evening commute!
The Tysons Express service is entirely funded by Virginia Megaprojects, a partnership between the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation.
