Manassas applauds “Hurricane Heroes”

Manassas city officials tipped their collective hats to city public works and utility crews, volunteer and career firefighters and police officers for their work in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and dubbed them “Hurricane Heroes,” according to a news release from Patty Prince, public information director.

During the storm with wind gusts up to 60 mph, a total of 170 residences were out of power for some amount of time.  Wind and rain uprooted trees, which fell on overhead power lines, utility poles were toppled and downed trees fell across roadways.

City of Manassas Public Works and Utility crews were there, out in the storm in the middle of the night, responding to citizens’ phone calls, restoring power, removing debris and trees that blocked roadways.  A large number of homeowners had their power restored within hours and by Tuesday all City of Manassas residents, except for several homes that required homeowner/contractor solutions, had fully restored power.

Fire & Rescue crews, both career and volunteer, were out during the storm helping people in need and responding to calls throughout the area.  The Police Department helped direct traffic around debris and closed roads until they were once again passable.

Said Prince, “These hurricane heroes serve the City of Manassas with the same dedication every day of the week. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes.  Some wear hard hats and others wear badges, but at the City of Manassas they are here to serve the public, even during hurricanes.”
