VDOT update at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025 on approaching snow storm

VDOT Northern Virginia District crews are prepared for heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures that are forecast to impact the region Sunday evening into Monday.

Residents are asked to continue to monitor forecasts, plan travel around the storm and be in place by Sunday afternoon, and be aware of the potential for icy spots as freezing temperatures remain through much of the week.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for VDOT’s Northern Virginia District and much of Virginia. Snowfall amounts of 5-10 inches are currently forecast by the National Weather Service. Snowfall amount potential can be found on their winter weather page. Please monitor forecasts closely for updates.

Northern Virginia District crews will pretreat interstates, primaries, and high-volume secondary roads, along with bridges, ramps, and overpasses with salt brine today. Crews will start staging on area roads Sunday morning and will begin treatment as snow begins Sunday evening and night.

Delay all non-essential travel and plan to travel around winter weather this weekend. Make sure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies, and give space to first responders and VDOT crews while they are out pretreating today and Sunday. Familiarize yourself with these winter driving tips.

Do your best to get to your destination midday Sunday to Sunday afternoon before the snow begins. Continue to check the forecast along the entirety of your trip and be ready to change plans if conditions worsen.

Be prepared for a multi-day response to this storm. VDOT treats roads in priority order, with interstates first, then primaries, high-volume secondaries, and finally residential streets.
