Heading toward the last qualifying tournament for the U.S. Solheim Cup team, the Aug. 25, AIG Women’s Open, five golfers have already made the US women’s team. It will tee off against the Solheim Cup European women golfers on Sept. 13-15 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Gainesville. In order of ranking, the U.S. team qualifiers are Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu, Lauren Coughlin, Ally Ewing and Allisen Corpuz.
Although there is not necessarily a home-course advantage at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Gainesville, locals can root on Lauren Coughlin who grew up in Chesapeake, VA, was named an All-American while attending the University of Virginia from 2011-2016 and was the 2016 ACC individual champion. She also won the Virginia Women’s Amateur in 2012 and 2013 and the Virginia Women’s Stroke Play Championship in 2014. She has been on the LPGA tour since 2018.
Coughlin moved up to the third spot in the rankings by winning two recent tournaments, the Canadian Open on July 28, and the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open, on Aug. 18.
The LPGA had earlier communicated, “The U.S.A. team will comprise of the top seven players in the U.S. Solheim Cup points standings, the top two players in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings not already eligible, and three captain’s picks. The European Team will comprise of the top two players in the European Solheim Cup Team points standings, the top six players in the Rolex Women’s World Cup Rankings not already eligible, and four captain’s picks.”
With 28 points at stake, the format in which the US and European teams will compete in for the Solheim Cup consists of two days of doubles match play, using foursomes and fourballs, followed by the last day of singles match play.
