PWC Police Crime report May 10: Haymarket man arrested after bomb threat at jail & courthouse

Bomb Threat Investigation – On Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 1:53PM, Prince William County Police officers responded to the Prince William-Manassas Adult Detention Center (ADC) located at 9320 Lee Ave. in Manassas (20110) to investigate a bomb threat.

The investigation revealed that the caller, identified as the accused, entered the lobby with a bag which he immediately brought to a restroom. The accused then called emergency services and falsely reported a bomb threat to the complex which includes the ADC and adjoining Courthouse.

ADC staff made contact with the accused inside the lobby where responding officers determined he was intoxicated and took him into custody. The courthouse and the ADC adjusted operation status as a precaution while officers conducted the investigation.

A police K-9 and members of the Virginia State Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit responded and determined the bag was not a bomb, and there was no threat to the complex.

Following the investigation, the accused, identified as Ray Darnell SMITH, was arrested. When officers attempted to assist the accused into a police vehicle, he actively resisted before being re-secured inside the vehicle.
