June 1 meeting of new Belmont Bay civic association in Woodbridge; Deshundra Jefferson to speak

Residents of several Belmont Bay communities situated between US 1 and the Occoquan River say they have formed a new nonprofit civic association that is concerned about   “massive development in and around their neighborhoods.”  The first meeting is Thursday, June 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Belmont Elementary School.

Upon forming the group, KP Lau president, was quoted in a news release as saying, “We intend to unite residents of all the Belmont Bay communities because we have common concerns regarding traffic, development, open space and protection of our environment.”

“Our open spaces have been designed for new development without consultation with the residents,” said Lau.  The new group’s leader huffed, “Developers have plans to “stack and pack” over 1390 homes which will more than double the population in Belmont Bay.  The PWC Board of County Supervisors, approved a comprehensive plan zoning change from open space to four houses per acre on land within 20 feet of the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge without consideration of an adequate buffer zone.”

Lau also alleged that “despite our collective objection,” the sitting Woodbridge Supervisor led a motion to seek funding for the Route123 flyover into our neighborhood.”

Rob Hartwell, a former Potomac River Commissioner and Fairfax County Planning Commissioner, called on community residents to be aware of “the huge development plans around us, that impact our environment, traffic, schools and safety.”

Officers of the new group, according to a news release are K.P. Lau, resident of BBHOA, President;  Rob Hartwell, resident of Riverbend Estate Civic Association, Secretary; and Jose G.  Santiago. resident of the Conservancy community, treasurer.
