Haymarket Regional Food Pantry seeks year-end donations and more volunteers

Eileen F. Smith, M. Ed., Executive Director of the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry, issued an end-of-year plea for donations and volunteers:

I want to thank you for your generous support of the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry.  Whether you have donated your time or your funds or simply your kind words, you have helped us serve so many. As an all volunteer organization (yes! no paid positions), we need your help now:  Will you make a donation this year?

Here are just a few highlights from 2022:
•We’re on track to help nearly 9,000 clients and their families (over 36 THOUSAND people).  Though the sharp increase from COVID has levelled off, we are still seeing 40-50 new clients each month.

• Just over 87 percent of our clients live in Haymarket, Gainesville, Manassas or Bristow.

• Our Food Maintenance team receives more than 250,000 pounds of food from local grocery stores, private donations, and/or food drives each year.
We give between 1,500-2,000 pounds of food each day, five days per week.  We are on track to give over 350 THOUSAND pounds of food to our clients this year. 
There are weeks we have empty shelves and need to supplement our food donations with food purchases made possible by financial donations like yours. 

The USDA estimates the cost to feed a family of four (with two school age children) for one week has increased from $150.56 (in 2020) to $221.50 (in 2022).  As we provide up to 3-4 days of food to our clients, a donation of $200 would help us feed TWO families for a week.
