Lock vehicles to reduce risk, city police urge;  series of break-ins reported

Larcenies from Motor Vehicles
Manassas City Police Officers are investigating a series of larcenies from vehicles that took place during the overnight hours on May 11, 2012 and May 12, 2012 at the following addresses:
• 8700 block of Weems Rd
• 9400 block of Flowerden Ln
• 10200 block of Cleary St
• 10200 block of Battlefield Dr
• 10000 block of Greenleaf Dr
• 9600 block of Shannon Ln
• 9300 block of Saffron Hill Ct
• 10200 block of Ginny Way

Victims reported that items such as electronics with a combined value of approximately $1,900.00 were taken, as well as a variety of personal items.  In the majority of cases, the vehicles were unlocked or thought to be locked at the time of the thefts.  In several instances, the vehicles were parked in the front of victims’ residences where outside lights had been left off.

Larcenies from vehicles and larcenies of motor vehicle parts are the most commonly reported property offenses in the City of Manassas.  Citizen reports of larcenies from vehicles resulted in 106 calls for service for the City of Manassas Police Department between Dec. 1, 2011 and May 14, 2012, according to a news release from the city’s crime prevention analyst.

To help reduce the risk of becoming victims of theft, residents are strongly encouraged to close car windows and lock doors at all times when leaving their vehicles unattended.  Leave exterior lights on overnight to illuminate driveways and other parking areas in front of your home.  When parking in public garages or lots, choose a spot that is well lit, away from shrubbery, nooks and hiding spots.  When possible, park where there are opportunities for passers-by or a lot attendant to provide surveillance.  Lastly, all residents are reminded to report suspicious activity to Police.
