Local leaders in virtual dialogue about equity in education Sept. 22

Conversations in the Community will host its monthly virtual discussion, “Educational Equity: What Is It and Why Is It Important?” on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. at http://www.citcom.org .

Panelists will include Dr. Lucretia Brown, Prince William County’s Chief Equity Officer; Amy Darden, M.Ed, Reading Intervention Specialist for Prince William County;
and Margie Sieg, M. Ed, ESOL teacher at Yorkshire Elementary School (Prince William County).

“Identifying and pursuing paths toward educational equity for all students should include ongoing conversations with community stakeholders. Our schools are strengthened when all students have what they need to thrive and that need may look different from student to student,” said Jennifer Roberts, founder and president of Conversations in the Community.

Roberts invited community members including educators, parents and students to observe. There will be a question-and-answer period following the panel discussion.

“It is imperative that we have safe and respectful spaces in which all voices can be heard. We especially want to hear from our students. Their voices and lived experiences are of the utmost importance,” added Roberts.

Conversations in the Community, Inc. is a local organization headquartered in Haymarket, VA. It is committed to engaging community members in meaningful and respectful dialogue about racism and addressing issues in education with the goals of developing empathy and building strong communities, Roberts said.
