Residents can learn about plans for the Balls Ford Road interchange construction project at Va. 234 at a meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at Gainesville Middle School, 8001 Limestone Drive, in Gainesville.
During the meeting, hosted by Prince William County Department of Transportation (PW-DOT) the public will have the chance to see the alignment of the project, which is set to begin in early 2020 on a design-build basis. Design-build means that the design will be done concurrently with construction.
The scope of the project includes, but is not limited to, design and construction of a four-lane, divided roadway and bridge crossing over the Norfolk Southern Railroad and a diverging diamond interchange over the Prince William Parkway.
The project is to start a little more than half a mile west of the existing Devlin Road-Wellington Road intersection and extend eastward a little more than a mile, with a new alignment, to the existing Balls Ford Road-Doane Drive intersection. There will be a 10-foot wide, multi-use path on the east side of the project and a five-foot wide sidewalk on the west side.
Elnour Adam, the county’s mega projects branch chief, said those who attend the meeting will be able to talk with V-DOT and PW-DOT officials and provide input on the project. “They will see the construction design – where the alignment of the road will be. If they have any suggestions or if they have any concerns, they can let us know. If we see any major suggestions for changes, we can look at them.”
Adam said that the project will improve access to Interstate 66 for nearby existing and planned developments and help alleviate some of the congestion in that area. “The Balls Ford Road interchange improvements will contribute to relieving existing and future traffic congestion within the Route 234 corridor, as well as improve traffic operations and coordinate with other planned transportation improvements in the vicinity of the interchange.”
