Westridge Elementary School assembly celebrates African-American history in story and song

Recently, students at Westridge Elementary School in Woodbridge hosted an assembly to celebrate African-American history, where they shared stories and music from many aspects of African-American culture. Whether singing “We Shall Overcome” or sharing the principles of Kwanzaa, the songs, stories, and information presented were woven into a colorful and exciting performance enjoyed by students, teachers, and parents in attendance alike.

Members of the “Guardian Knights” (a select group of fourth- and fifth-graders who make up the leadership and anti-bullying team) researched and presented information about several historic and current African-Americans, showcasing their contributions to music, science, education, law, and the arts on a bulletin board in the entrance of the school.

Fifth-grader and Guardian Knight Kamiya Dancy explained that this project was personally relevant to her. “As an African-American you are sometimes underestimated. This is a positive experience that I can always remember,” stated Dancy.
