Delta Sigma Theta to roll out red carpet for the arts in Woodbridge Dec. 5

Prince William County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will roll out the Red Carpet on Saturday, Dec. 5 for April Ryan, author of “The Presidency in Black and White,” which chronicles her career as a White House Correspondent and eight other talented local area artists.

In its sixth year, the Red Carpet Showcase is free and will be held at the Prince William Association of Realtors Building, 4545 Daisy Reid Avenue in Woodbridge, VA from 1 to 4 p.m.

Each year, the Showcase features rising artists, authors and musicians to encourage literacy and exposure to the arts and showcase emerging talent. 

The 2015 event consists of a program, allowing each artist—photographer, authors, calligrapher and singer to share his or her work. The day also includes a reception, so attendees can enjoy refreshments, talk with participating artists and purchase their work. 

April Ryan, author of “The Presidency in Black and White,” and this year’s Red Carpet Showcase featured guest artist, is a White House Correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks. Ryan is an 18 year veteran and has covered the White House during the administrations of Presidents Clinton, W. Bush and Obama. She has also been on The Tom Joyner Morning Show, MSNBC and CSPAN.

The eight emerging artists, authors and musicians include Prince William residents Bryant Poole, photographer and Cynthia Wilson, singer/psalmist; Felecia Brice McFail, calligrapher; Joy Pearson, inspirational writer; Quynn Johnson, award-winning tap dancer and children’s book author; Nicole McLean, author of “Reclaim Your Fabulousness,” a handbook on surviving breast cancer;  and fiction authors Dionne Peart and Cheryl Robinson.

The Showcase will also highlight Prince William community youth. Students from Woodbridge Senior High School’s Young Poet Laureate’s Circle and members of PWCAC DST mentoring programs for middle and high school age girls, the Delta Academy and Delta GEMS.
 
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. established the National Arts and Letters Commission with the purpose of supporting African-American women in the arts. Throughout its history, the Commission has been comprised of accomplished members of the sorority including Lena Horne, Nikki Giovanni, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Angela Bassett and Daphne Maxwell Reid.

The Prince William Alumnae Chapter’s Arts and Letters Committee plans and coordinates the Red Carpet Showcase to expose and educate the community about the creative and performing arts. The Committee’s programs are designed to promote awareness and appreciation for various forms of the arts.

The Prince William County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a sisterhood of women, actively engaged in programs of public service.
