June 2 public hearing at BHS on I-66 Outside the Beltway EIS

Virginia Department of Transportation is conducting four public meetings to seek input on the Tier 2 Environmental Assessment for improvements on Interstate 66 outside the Capital Beltway (I-495) and US Route 15 in Prince William County, as well as revised design concepts reducing project impacts.

The Tier 2 Environmental Assessment is a study of a combination of improvement concepts from the Tier 1 EIS including: two express lanes, three regular lanes and rapid bus service, in addition to other safety and operational improvements. The Tier 2 study also evaluates potential effects the proposed I-66 improvements would have on air quality, noise, neighborhoods, parks, recreation areas, historic properties, threatened and endangered species habitats, wetlands and streams.

All hearings are scheduled from 5:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Presentations on the project will begin at 7:00 p.m. with public comment to follow.

As proposed, the I-66 Corridor Improvements Outside the Beltway (1-495 to Rt. 15) would include:
Two managed Express lanes in each direction for toll, HOV and transit
Three conventional lanes in each direction with a hardened shoulder
Reservation for future rail extension
Additional and expanded park-and-ride lots
Enhanced commuter bus service*
New rapid bus service* in the express lanes, running all day, both east and west bound.
*To be phased in by 2040 with forecasted demand

According to a news release from the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance, “I-66 corridor needs cannot be met with one stand-alone improvement. Rather, a bold solution that combines additional road capacity with phased transit enhancement/expansion is needed to address current congestion and the forecasted growth in population (32%), jobs (68%) and auto trips (10-66%) in the corridor over the next 25 years.”
