On Friday, Nov. 22, the American Red Cross will mark the grand opening of its new state-of-the-art blood donation center in Manassas. This new facility will collect thousands of blood products each year from generous donors who roll up a sleeve to help save lives.
Four $1000 scholarships are available for students majoring in or showing a strong desire to major in a course curriculum related to natural resource conservation and/or environmental studies. Deadline to apply is March 13.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)has postponed a “pardon our dust” meeting Feb. 26 on a project to construct a ductbank that will carry new undergrounded utilities along Route 1 between Mary’s Way and Annapolis Way. When the meeting is rescheduled, residents can meet the project team to learn more about construction and traffic impacts expected to begin in March.
BEACON for Adult Literacy will hold a free training session on Saturday, March 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., for adult volunteers who want to help the organization' s ESL (English as a Second Language) students.

Columbia Gas of Virginia customers will notice their monthly bills decrease 8.8% compared to their current level beginning Monday, March 2. The typical monthly residential customer bill will be a seasonal monthly amount of $115.76 compared to the current level of $126.92. This comparison is based on a 100 Ccf seasonal usage level.
Gardeners considering adding English ivy, golden bamboo or Japanese barberry to their yards in Virginia may want to reconsider. These plants — and 87 others — are on the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) new list of non-native invasive plants of the state, according to a news release.

Prince William County School officials say the board will need to identify a combination of $17.5 million in spending cuts and revenue enhancements to pay for the initial 2015-16 school budget presented during the first "public meeting" on the budget on Monday night, Feb. 23.
